You Are Successful Today

Episode 321 of The Business Development Podcast challenges one of the most common myths in business and life: that success is a future moment we eventually arrive at. In this solo episode, Kelly Kennedy reframes success as something far more powerful and accessible. Instead of waiting for a milestone like wealth, recognition, or a big breakthrough, Kelly explains that success is actually a daily pattern built through forward movement, personal standards, and the decision to keep showing up. If you are learning, growing, solving problems, and continuing to move forward, you are already living a successful life.
Kelly also shares practical strategies to help listeners live in success today, including keeping your word to yourself, defining your own scoreboard, building standards instead of relying on motivation, and staying in the game even when things get difficult. Through personal stories, real-world examples, and a powerful mindset shift, this episode encourages entrepreneurs and leaders to stop waiting for success to arrive and instead recognize the success they are already building every single day.
Key Takeaways:
- Success is not a moment you arrive at. It’s a pattern of daily actions and standards you live by.
- If you are consistently moving forward, learning, and improving, you are already living a successful life.
- Waiting for the world to declare you successful will leave you waiting forever. You must define success for yourself.
- Real success comes from keeping your commitments to yourself, especially when no one else is watching.
- Momentum beats intensity. Small actions taken consistently create massive results over time.
- Motivation fades, but standards last. Successful people operate based on discipline and personal expectations.
- Growth rarely happens in comfort. Choosing challenges over convenience is what builds capability.
- Most people don’t fail because they lack ability. They fail because they quit too soon.
- Gratitude for what you have and ambition for what comes next can exist at the same time.
- The question to ask every day is simple: “What would the successful version of me do today?” Then take that action.

What if I told you that you're already wildly successful?
Speaker ANot someday, not when the revenue hits, not when the recognition comes, not when somebody finally says, hey, you made it right now.
Speaker AWe've been conditioned to believe success is a moment, a milestone, a finish line.
Speaker ABut nobody rings a bell.
Speaker AThere's no announcement.
Speaker AThere's no single day when everything suddenly feels complete.
Speaker ASuccess isn't a day.
Speaker AIt's a way of life.
Speaker AIf you're getting up and choosing to move forward, if you're building when it's hard, if you're keeping your word, if you're growing, learning, stretching, you're already on the roadmap.
Speaker AToday, we are going to reframe success.
Speaker ANot as a destination you're chasing, but as a standard you're living.
Speaker ABecause the truth is this, you don't have to wait to be successful.
Speaker AYou just have to choose it.
Speaker BThe great Mark Cuban once said, business happens over years and years.
Speaker BValue is measured in the total upside of a business relationship, not by how much you squeezed out in any one deal.

Speaker BCa.
Speaker BLet's do it.
Speaker BWelcome to the Business Development Podcast podcast.
Speaker BAnd now your expert host, Kelly Kennedy.
Speaker AHello.
Speaker AWelcome to episode 321 of the Business Development Podcast and let me start today's show by mentioning that I am currently fighting a wicked cold as we head into the final months of our lovely Canadian winters.
Speaker AAnd I appreciate all of your understanding.
Speaker AIf I sound a little bit off today, my apologies people, but the show must go on.
Speaker AWe had another really crazy water situation happen last night in our house, guys, and I want to tell you all about it.
Speaker AIt seems like so many of my homeowner challenges seem to involve water.
Speaker ANot loving that, but can deal with it a lot of the time.
Speaker AWe woke up this morning to a puddle of water coming out from under our fridge and the source is going to surprise you.
Speaker AI had actually cleaned it up previously in the middle of the night.
Speaker AI shit you not guys.
Speaker ALast night, probably around midnight, I went downstairs because Jet wanted water and didn't turn on any lights and stepped in a big puddle of water and thought to myself, damn it, my kids have like dropped ice on the ground or spilled water and didn't clean it up.
Speaker AAnd not uncommon, not unusual, thought nothing of it, wiped it up and went back to bed.
Speaker ABut when I woke up this morning, I heard Shelby say, oh, no, there's a puddle of water here by the fridge.
Speaker AAnd then my sons came up and was like, hey, there's like water all by the fridge.
Speaker AAnd I got up, like, shot out of bed.
Speaker AShot out of bed.
Speaker AAs somebody who realizes this problem might not have been a puddle of spilled water and went downstairs, and sure enough, there was a massive puddle of water coming out from under our fridge.
Speaker AAfter some investigation pulling the fridge out and realizing that it has something to do with the water line that is going to our fridge, I track down the water line, I shut off the water, and we pull out a panel from underneath the cupboard to try to see what the heck is going on.
Speaker AAnd oh, my gosh, guys, the problem was not just leaking water.
Speaker AWe have mice in our kitchen.
Speaker AAh, so.
Speaker ASo, yeah, we had a mouse literally chew through the water line trying to get from our fridge to its nice little hiding place underneath our cupboards.
Speaker ASo that was great.
Speaker ASo one thing after another, we are going to deal with it.
Speaker ABut another water problem.
Speaker ABut trust me, it is absolutely going to lead into what we are talking about today.
Speaker AAnd while that was definitely unfortunate, we do have some incredible news to give to you all.
Speaker AThunder Bay Hydraulics and Atlas Elite Lifts out of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, have chosen to get behind our show.
Speaker AThank you, thank you, thank you, guys.
Speaker AThat is absolutely incredible.
Speaker AThey have chosen to support our mission to educate and inspire leaders from around the world.
Speaker AAnd I want to give a gigantic shout out to the president of those companies, Jamie Crozier.
Speaker AIn case you missed it, he was recently a guest on the business development podcast.
Speaker AAnd of course, I want to give a shout out to our title sponsors and longtime sponsors of our show, Hyper V Technologies.
Speaker AAnd of course, the President, Mr. Colin harms himself for two full years of support of this show.
Speaker AThis show is possible thanks to the support of sponsors like HyperVac, like Thunder Bay Hydraulics and Atlas Lifts, and we appreciate them greatly.
Speaker AFrom the bottom of my heart, both of you, thank you so much.
Speaker AAnd 2026 is shaping up to be a really epic year for this show.
Speaker AToday.
Speaker AI wanted to spend some time talking all about the roadmap of success and what is success.
Speaker ASee, success is something that many of us are chasing, me included, something that can feel very hard to attain.
Speaker AAnd my hope today is to demystify it a little bit, demystify success and help you Realize that you are already quite successful, probably a lot more successful than you think.
Speaker AAnd so let's just get into it.
Speaker AWhat is success anyways?
Speaker AWhat the heck is it?
Speaker AWe can't really be successful until we define what it really is, can we?
Speaker ANow, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, success is defined as the achieving of the results that we wanted or hoped for or something that achieves positive results.
Speaker AYou can have two different types of successes.
Speaker AThe reality is that we all want to be successful.
Speaker AFor some, that's wealth.
Speaker AFor some, that's family.
Speaker AAnd for some, it's fame.
Speaker ABut what does that even mean?
Speaker AHow do we even know you can be all of these things?
Speaker AWealthy, have a great family, be famous and still not feel successful?
Speaker ASee, here's the thing nobody tells you, nobody's out there ringing a bell.
Speaker AConfetti does not fall from the ceiling.
Speaker AAnd there is no universal you made it notification.
Speaker AAnd even if you hit your target, the money, the big house, the fame, you still won't necessarily be done.
Speaker ASee, most of the time you're not done because the goal post just moves to something greater.
Speaker AThat is the trap of success.
Speaker ASee, we have been conditioned to believe that it's simply a moment when in reality, success is simply a daily pattern.
Speaker ASuccess is something you choose to do every single day.
Speaker AIt's waking up and doing what you said you would do.
Speaker AIt's handling pressure better than you used to.
Speaker AIt's building relationships that truly matter.
Speaker AIt's becoming someone more capable than you were yesterday.
Speaker AIf success was just a single day, most high performers would retire the day after they hit it, right?
Speaker AYou're successful, why even bother?
Speaker AKeep going, you're done.
Speaker ASee, but that's not what happens.
Speaker ASuccessful people keep going.
Speaker AThey don't tend to quit.
Speaker ASee, because success is not just a day.
Speaker ASuccess is not just a day in your life.
Speaker AIt's a way of life.
Speaker AAnd the great thing about that is that you don't have to wait.
Speaker AYou get to choose to be successful today.
Speaker AYou get to choose what success means to you.
Speaker AYou get to define it.
Speaker AYou don't have to wait for the world to define it for you.
Speaker AAnd that is absolutely incredible.
Speaker AYou get to choose to be successful today.
Speaker AThis year I got to celebrate five years of capital business development, three years and 300 plus episodes of the business development podcast, the birth of my second son, a happy and healthy family, and of course fortunate to get a signal award, making us a multi award winning show.
Speaker AMany would say that based on this alone, I've made it.
Speaker AI'm successful.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker ABut nothing changed, guys.
Speaker ANothing changed.
Speaker ANo marching band showed up on my front door.
Speaker AYes, I have more resources, more awards, but I still work hard every single day.
Speaker AI learn every day.
Speaker AI write these show plans the same way I have since episode one.
Speaker AI complete business development contracts to get paid, and I pay my bills as I always have.
Speaker ALife is pretty much the same today as it was two or three years ago.
Speaker AIf you wait for a big moment to feel successful, you will be waiting forever.
Speaker AForever, guys.
Speaker ASee, real success comes from the recognition that.
Speaker AThat by simply moving forward every single day, you are already successful.
Speaker AIf you choose to move forward today, even one step, you are already living a life of success.
Speaker ABecause success is not something that you discover.
Speaker AIt's something you get to decide.
Speaker AAnd the day to decide is not someday.
Speaker AIt's right now.
Speaker AIt's today.
Speaker ASee, I started today's show by talking about my cold, which sucks, my water challenges.
Speaker AAnd here's the thing.
Speaker AYeah, I'm not super happy about it.
Speaker AI'm not happy that I had these challenges this morning, that I'm still feeling under the weather.
Speaker AYou know, maybe I'm not even happy that things are not as far along as I'd always hoped.
Speaker ABut wait.
Speaker AI am going to choose to move forward and be successful anyway.
Speaker AI am going to choose to do move the needle items that make a difference in my life every single day.
Speaker ASee, today, success looked simply like getting rest.
Speaker AHonestly, I was feeling like trash today.
Speaker AFelt like getting some rest.
Speaker AI went to bed last night super early, and I'm feeling a little better today.
Speaker AIt meant stopping that water leak.
Speaker AThat was absolutely a success.
Speaker AAnd you know, I even managed to attend a couple of meetings and write and record this show for me, that is insane success, right?
Speaker AIt's success in a day.
Speaker AAnd I could have chose to just go back to bed today, but I didn't.
Speaker AAnd so the fact that I managed to get up, handle all of those challenges and get through the day, moving forward, that is success.
Speaker ASee, by simply moving forward and not giving up, I am successful.
Speaker AAnd if I continue to make this decision to move forward every single day, I will live a successful life no matter what it brings.
Speaker AAnd you will too.
Speaker ASo today, I challenge you to stop waiting for success to find you.
Speaker AI can pretty much guarantee you that if you are listening to this show, you are already successful.
Speaker ARemember, success is not a destination.
Speaker ASuccess is a way of life.
Speaker AYou get to choose what success means to you.
Speaker AYou get to choose what success looks like to you.
Speaker AAnd the moment you decide, you are Successful, then you are.
Speaker AIt's up to you.
Speaker AIf you wait for the world to tell you you're successful, you're going to be waiting forever.
Speaker AYou need to decide today what success means to you and that you are already on a successful path and and living a successful life every single day.
Speaker AFor those of you who want to start living successful right now, and I hope that's all of you, here are 10 powerful tips to help you live in success.
Speaker ANot someday, not tomorrow, right now.
Speaker ANumber one, keep your word to yourself.
Speaker ASelf trust is the foundation of success.
Speaker ADo what you say you will do even when nobody else is looking.
Speaker AMaybe especially when nobody else is looking.
Speaker ANumber two, move forward every single day.
Speaker AListen guys, every week I write out a move the needle list every single Monday morning.
Speaker AAnd maybe you might want to try this too.
Speaker AAnd for those of you who don't know what a move the needle list is, it's five to 10 line items that if you do them, would massively move the needle for you personally or your business every single week.
Speaker AIt doesn't have to be dramatic.
Speaker AWhether it's like a call, you've been putting off, a workout, you've been putting off a one page written on your new book or one uncomfortable conversation, whatever it is that momentum every time you tackle something on the move the needle list, it creates momentum.
Speaker AAnd momentum beats intensity every single time.
Speaker ASo think about it this way.
Speaker AWhat can I do today that will move the needle for me?
Speaker AIt's those little things that move you forward every day.
Speaker AThat's 365 big things every single year.
Speaker AImagine what that does for you over the course of a year, three years, five years, 10 years, you absolutely are inevitably going to be successful.
Speaker AAnd if you are moving the needle for yourself and your business every single day.
Speaker ANumber three, define your scoreboard.
Speaker AIf you let the world define your success, you will always feel behind you will.
Speaker AYou can't wait for the world to tell you know what matters to you and measure that.
Speaker AWhat is successful is up to you.
Speaker AWhat makes you successful is up to you know what matters and measure it.
Speaker ANumber four, build standards, not motivation.
Speaker ASee, motivation always fades.
Speaker AStandards remain forever successful.
Speaker APeople don't feel inspired every day, but they choose to operate anyways.
Speaker AIf you think that I felt this morning like getting up and moving forward, I did not.
Speaker AI was not feeling good this morning, but I knew that I had things to do and move the needle items to tackle, a show to make, clients to help.
Speaker AI had stuff to do that is my standard.
Speaker AI've been doing it for years, come hell or high water, I make sure that I keep to my standards.
Speaker ARemember, successful people don't feel inspired every day, but they choose to operate anyways.
Speaker AAnd I believe that these are actually your most successful days.
Speaker AThe days where you don't feel like doing it, but you do it anyway.
Speaker AThose are the hardest but most successful days of your life.
Speaker AAnd if you can move forward on the hard days, for you, the sky is the limit.
Speaker ANumber five.
Speaker AStrengthen something daily.
Speaker AWhether it's your mind, your body, your skills, or your network, improvements compound very quietly.
Speaker ABut then one day, it becomes blatantly obvious how much improvement you have made.
Speaker AOkay, Strengthen something daily.
Speaker AIt doesn't have to be your business.
Speaker AIt can be your family, it can be your mind, it can be your health, it can be your skills, your network, whatever it is.
Speaker AJust make sure every day you're working on getting 1% better on something important.
Speaker ANumber six.
Speaker AHandle hard things quickly.
Speaker AAvoidance always kills momentum.
Speaker ASuccess grows when you tackle and overcome challenges head on.
Speaker AEvery challenge you face and overcome is a check mark in the book of success.
Speaker ANumber seven.
Speaker AChoose growth over comfort.
Speaker AComfort feels safe, but it stalls progress.
Speaker AGrowth feels uncomfortable, but it builds capability.
Speaker AI have never grown in the ease of my life.
Speaker ATake on the hard things.
Speaker AYou will be grateful for the lessons you learn in doing so.
Speaker ANumber eight.
Speaker APractice gratitude with ambition.
Speaker AYou can be grateful for today and hungry for tomorrow.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AYou can be happy about today and still want more for tomorrow.
Speaker AAt the same time, you can be successful today and even more successful tomorrow.
Speaker AIt's not one or the other, it's both.
Speaker AYou can have both at the same time.
Speaker AAnd when you can be grateful for today and excited about what's next, guess what?
Speaker AThat balance creates grounded confidence and makes you better at everything you take on moving forward.
Speaker ANumber nine.
Speaker AAnd this might be one of the most important lessons.
Speaker AStay in the game.
Speaker AStay in the game.
Speaker ANo matter what you're building.
Speaker AWhether you're an entrepreneur, a leader, an executive, you're going to have hard times.
Speaker AMost people don't fail.
Speaker AHear me out on this.
Speaker AMost people don't fail.
Speaker AThey quit.
Speaker AThey quit.
Speaker AAnd if you choose to show up today, you are still succeeding.
Speaker APeriod.
Speaker APeriod.
Speaker AAs long as you're in it, as long as you're working at it, moving forward, you are succeeding.
Speaker ANumber 10.
Speaker AAlign action with identity.
Speaker AAsk yourself, what would the successful version of me do today?
Speaker AAnd then do that.
Speaker ALive how you want to be.
Speaker ABe the person.
Speaker ABe the successful person you were born to be.
Speaker AAnd don't wait.
Speaker ADo it today.
Speaker ASuccess waits for nobody.
Speaker ABut you never needed to wait for it either.
Speaker AYou're already successful.
Speaker AEvery day you get up and choose to move forward, you add to that success.
Speaker AWhere you end up is completely up to you.
Speaker ABut don't miss the joy in today.
Speaker ADon't be constantly living for tomorrow that successful version of yourself down the road.
Speaker AYou are successful today.
Speaker AHave the courage to embrace what you have already achieved.
Speaker AYou are a success already and what comes next, whatever it is, is truly up to you.
Speaker AI believe in you.
Speaker AYou absolutely got this.
Speaker AAnd if today's message resonated with you, I would highly encourage you to check out the Catalyst Club where leaders just like you support each other's success on a daily and weekly basis.
