The Underdog Power of Community

In Episode 277 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy takes you inside a true David vs. Goliath battle as he fights for the 2025 Signal Awards in the Business category. As the only Canadian and the only independent finalist up against billion dollar networks like Wondery, iHeart, and Amazon, Kelly reveals how underdogs can rally support and compete with giants. He shares the exact playbook he is using: creating awareness through posts, driving action with direct outreach, scaling with email, amplifying through media, and most importantly trusting community to carry the fight. Along the way you will learn the pitfalls to avoid, the importance of gratitude, and why clarity and simplicity turn support into real action.
Now Kelly needs his community more than ever. With just one week left to vote, your support will decide the outcome. It takes only ten seconds to cast your vote, and every share amplifies the fight. If this podcast has ever inspired you, taught you, or helped you move the needle in your business, this is the moment to give back. Vote now for The Business Development Podcast in the Business category of the Signal Awards at vote.signalaward.com. Voting is open until October 9th. Vote and share to create a tidal wave of support and help David defeat a giant.
Key Takeaways:
1. Awareness is only the first step — posts create visibility but they don’t guarantee action.
2. Direct outreach drives results — personal messages cut through the noise and spark real movement.
3. Clarity matters — a single link and simple instructions remove friction and boost support.
4. Equip your community — give them shareable assets, captions, and graphics so helping you is easy.
5. Media amplifies your story — but only if you frame it with a compelling narrative worth telling.
6. Gratitude fuels momentum — thank people personally and publicly to deepen connection and trust.
7. Don’t confuse numbers with commitment — likes and comments are not the same as votes or sales.
8. Respect boundaries — pushing too hard or spamming can damage relationships you’ve worked to build.
9. At some point you must let go — after doing everything in your power, trust your community to carry it forward.
10. Underdogs win with people, not budgets — community is the greatest differentiator against giants.

Speaker ACa.
Speaker BLet's do it.
Speaker BWelcome to the Business Development Podcast.
Speaker BAnd now your expert host, Kelly Kennedy.
Speaker AHello.
Speaker AWelcome to episode 276 of the Business Development Podcast.
Speaker AWe are finalists in the Signal Awards for 2025.
Speaker AAnd when I say finalists, I mean we are shoulder to shoulder with some of the biggest names in business podcasting, billion dollar networks like Wondery, iHeart and Amazon.
Speaker AThese are companies with entire teams, marketing, budgets and reach that I, as an independent creator, simply cannot match.
Speaker AAnd yet here we are, still standing still in the fight.
Speaker AAnd not because of money, not because of ads, but because of people just like you.
Speaker AWhen you're an independent creator, whether you're running a podcast, a business, or building anything from scratch, there are moments where you look at who you're up against and it feels almost laughable.
Speaker AWhere you ask yourself, man, what right do I even have to be in this fight?
Speaker ABut those are the moments that define you.
Speaker AThose are the moments where you learn the real difference maker isn't your budget, isn't your ad spend, it isn't your team size.
Speaker AIt's Your community.
Speaker AAnd guys, I've been here before.
Speaker AThis isn't the first underdog battle the business development podcast has been in.
Speaker ALet's rewind way back to the beginning of 2023.
Speaker AWe were just four months into this journey.
Speaker ANobody knew who I was in the podcasting world yet.
Speaker AWe didn't have hundreds of episodes.
Speaker AWe didn't have awards yet.
Speaker AAnd then we got nominated for the Quill Awards.
Speaker AI thought, there's no way that an independent little Canadian show can win against the big names already established in this space.
Speaker ABut we rallied.
Speaker AI reached out to people, I shared our story, I asked for support.
Speaker AAnd guess what?
Speaker AThe community showed up.
Speaker AYou showed up.
Speaker AAnd we won.
Speaker ABest business podcast 2023.
Speaker AJust four months into this show, we won our very first award.
Speaker AAnd that was a massive turning point.
Speaker AThat win was the proof that I needed that this show mattered.
Speaker AFast forward to 2024 and 2025.
Speaker AWe were finalists again at the Quill Awards, this time for Best Business Podcast and Podcast of the Year.
Speaker ABut we didn't take home the top prize from the judges.
Speaker ABut we did bring home silver in two categories, the W3 awards.
Speaker AAnd honestly, I was pretty proud of that.
Speaker ABecause every single recognition we've earned has come not from massive budgets, but from the groundswell of people who believe in this show.
Speaker ABut this year's Signal Awards, it feels really different.
Speaker AIt feels like the biggest battle yet.
Speaker ABecause this time, the competition isn't just big names.
Speaker AIt's billion dollar networks with global reach.
Speaker AAnd we are literally the only independent show in business category.
Speaker AGuys, we are the only Canadian show in the business category.
Speaker AAnd on paper, we probably shouldn't even be there.
Speaker ABut here's what makes it powerful.
Speaker ADavid doesn't fight Goliath alone.
Speaker AWe tend to think of David as one guy with a slingshot standing against a giant.
Speaker ABut the truth is, David had a community behind him.
Speaker AHe had people who believed in him.
Speaker AAnd that's what underdogs really have.
Speaker AThe exponential force of community.
Speaker AAnd that's what today's episode is all about.
Speaker ABecause over the past couple of weeks, I've had to business develop this award the same way that I've built companies and help my clients build theirs.
Speaker AI've had to post, I've had to reach out, I've had to email, I've had to pitch media.
Speaker AI've had to rally every ounce of support that I can muster.
Speaker AAnd through it all, I've realized something.
Speaker ACommunity is the great differentiator.
Speaker AIt's the force multiplier.
Speaker AIt's the secret weapon every underdog has access to, if you're willing to ask for it.
Speaker AAnd I'll tell you this, it hasn't been easy.
Speaker AThere's been excitement.
Speaker AThere's been exhaustion.
Speaker AThere's been the gnawing uncertainty of not knowing if this effort will be enough.
Speaker ABut that's exactly why I want to share it with you today.
Speaker ABecause it isn't just about me or this podcast.
Speaker AIt's about you.
Speaker ABecause whether you're launching a podcast, chasing a big deal, or trying to get your startup noticed, you're going to face your own Goliaths.
Speaker AAnd when you do, the lesson is the same.
Speaker AYou don't win by outspending them.
Speaker AYou win by activating your people.
Speaker ASo today, I want to walk you through exactly how I fought this fight so far.
Speaker AStep by step, the moves that actually move the needle, the pitfalls to avoid, and the bigger truth that I've learned along the way.
Speaker AThat at some point, you do everything in your power, and then you have to let go and trust your community to carry it forward.
Speaker AThis is the underdog power of community.
Speaker AAll right, let's get into it.
Speaker APart one.
Speaker AHow do we fight the good fight?
Speaker AFirst, we have to create awareness with posts.
Speaker AThe first move was posting.
Speaker APosts are like lighting the beacon.
Speaker AThey announce that something is happening.
Speaker AThey show momentum, and they create context.
Speaker AWhen I first posted about the Signal Awards, my feed lit up.
Speaker APeople celebrated with us, and it felt incredible.
Speaker ABut here's the truth.
Speaker ALikes don't equal votes.
Speaker AComments don't equal action.
Speaker APosts create awareness, but they don't create movement.
Speaker AIf you're launching a product, a fundraiser, or an event, start with posts.
Speaker AYou need to announce it.
Speaker AYou need to show momentum.
Speaker ABut don't confuse attention with action.
Speaker AThey are two very different things.
Speaker AAwareness may be the spark, but action is the fire.
Speaker AStep two, we have to drive action with direct outreach.
Speaker AThe real shift came with direct outreach.
Speaker AI started sending dms.
Speaker ALiterally guys.
Speaker AHundreds of them.
Speaker AShort, clear and respectful.
Speaker AHey, Sarah, quick favor.
Speaker AWe're the only Canadian independent in the Signal Awards.
Speaker ACan you tap this and vote now?
Speaker AIt takes 10 seconds.
Speaker AThank you for always having my back.
Speaker AThat's when the needle moved, guys.
Speaker APeople replied with screenshots.
Speaker AThey shared encouragement.
Speaker ASome even posted on their own feeds.
Speaker AThey were literally giving me percentage status updates.
Speaker AYou have to ask them directly.
Speaker ABe specific.
Speaker AMake it personal.
Speaker AStep three, we then scale with email.
Speaker AOnce the one to one outreach was moving, it was time to scale.
Speaker AThat's where email came in.
Speaker AI wrote carefully crafted emails to all past Guests, supporters and friends of the show.
Speaker AAnd here's what worked.
Speaker AClarity.
Speaker AA single link, a ready to share caption, a graphic, and no friction for you.
Speaker AIf you want scale, equip your people.
Speaker ADon't just ask them to help, hand them the tools.
Speaker AThe more you can make it easy for them to follow to help you out, the more likely you are to get that support.
Speaker ASo don't rely on them to create that reshare post.
Speaker ADon't rely on them to create a graphic.
Speaker ADon't rely on them to find the link.
Speaker AHand it all to them and let them know what you need.
Speaker AIf you want scale, you have to equip your supporters with what they need to help you.
Speaker AGive them the tools, give them the direction, make it as easy as possible.
Speaker AStep four.
Speaker AWe have to amplify with media.
Speaker AThe final lever is media.
Speaker ABut here's the thing.
Speaker AMedia doesn't care about help me win.
Speaker AMedia cares about story.
Speaker AAnd we had one.
Speaker AWe were the only Canadian independent podcast up against billion dollar networks.
Speaker AThat is a story worth amplifying for you.
Speaker AIf you want amplification, you probably need a hook.
Speaker AWhat makes your ask newsworthy?
Speaker AWhat makes people lean in?
Speaker AMedia amplifies.
Speaker ABut the story has to be compelling enough for them to care.
Speaker ANow we have to talk about the tension.
Speaker AHere's where it gets real.
Speaker AWe've posted, we've DM people, we've emailed, we've pitched, we've done everything in our power and yet we're still in third place.
Speaker AThat's the tension of being an underdog.
Speaker AYou can fight with everything you have, but you're not in control of the outcome.
Speaker AAt some point, more grind doesn't move the needle.
Speaker AAt some point, you have to let go.
Speaker AAnd letting go isn't quitting, it's trusting.
Speaker ATrusting that the community you've built will carry it further than you ever could have on your own.
Speaker AThe final step isn't more grind.
Speaker AThe final step is trust and acceptance.
Speaker AHere's the big takeaway.
Speaker AUnderdogs don't win with budgets.
Speaker AWe don't win with ad spends.
Speaker AWe don't win with massive teams.
Speaker AWe win with people.
Speaker ABut community isn't automatic.
Speaker AThere are some things that you have to do.
Speaker ANumber one, you have to ask directly.
Speaker AGuys, you have to be brave.
Speaker AYou can't get something that you don't ask for.
Speaker APeople don't give you business that you don't ask for.
Speaker AIt's always the missing piece.
Speaker AYou have to ask for what you want and you have to make it crystal clear.
Speaker AWhat you need.
Speaker ANumber two, you have to remove friction.
Speaker AYou have to make it as easy as possible for people to help you.
Speaker AGive them everything that they need to help you create the assets, create the messaging, provide the links, make it as simple as possible for people to help you be as clear as possible about what you need and then deliver the assets to do so.
Speaker AHere's the big takeaway.
Speaker AUnderdogs don't win with budgets.
Speaker AWe don't win with ad spends.
Speaker AWe don't win with massive teams.
Speaker AWe win with the exponential power of people.
Speaker ABut community isn't automatic.
Speaker AThere are still some things that you have to do.
Speaker AYou have to ask directly for what you need, what you want.
Speaker ADon't beat around the bush.
Speaker ABe clear.
Speaker ANumber two, we have to remove friction.
Speaker AWe have to make it as easy as possible for people to say yes.
Speaker ANumber three, we have to provide clarity and assets.
Speaker AWe have to be very crystal clear about what we need from people and we have to provide them all the tools to do it in the easiest, most clear, simple way possible.
Speaker AAnd lastly, we have to show gratitude at every step of the way.
Speaker ARemember, people don't have to help you.
Speaker AThank them.
Speaker AThank them again.
Speaker AAnd in the end, if you're not sure if you've thanked them enough, do it again.
Speaker AAnd then you have to let go.
Speaker AYou have to trust your people.
Speaker AThe underdog power of community is real, but it only works if you activate it and then trust it.
Speaker ANow, there are some challenges that we can absolutely fall into if we're not careful.
Speaker ALet's discuss some of the pitfalls to avoid.
Speaker AWe have to avoid being pushy or guilt tripping.
Speaker ARemember, you are asking for help.
Speaker ANobody is obligated to give it to you.
Speaker ADo not be pushy.
Speaker ADo not guilt trip people.
Speaker AAnd make sure you thank people even when they say, I'm sorry, I can't help you this time.
Speaker ADo not be vague.
Speaker AYou have to be clear.
Speaker AYou have to lay everything out and you have to make it as easy as possible for people to understand what you need from them.
Speaker ANumber three, don't bury your link.
Speaker AMake the link as easy as humanly possible for people to share, understand, click, show it in everything.
Speaker ADo not make people search for the links.
Speaker ANumber four.
Speaker ASpamming endlessly.
Speaker AListen.
Speaker AOne to two asks, period.
Speaker AThat's it.
Speaker ANo more, right?
Speaker APeople are going to help you or they're not.
Speaker AYou have to just accept that some people are not going to help you this time.
Speaker AThat doesn't mean they won't help you next time.
Speaker ABut we have to be respectful of people.
Speaker ANumber five do not treat support as a transaction.
Speaker ASupport is reciprocal.
Speaker AAt some point people might be asking you for the same kind of support and it's important that you remember that.
Speaker AAnd it's important that you repay the favor when the time comes.
Speaker AAnd lastly, do not forget gratitude.
Speaker ARemember, people do not have to help you.
Speaker AThe power of community is built on respect, kindness, generosity.
Speaker ABe generous, be thankful.
Speaker AFind a way to let them know how much you appreciate them.
Speaker ARemember respect first, clarity second Brevity third.
Speaker ANow even with all that, there are still some additional tips that can tilt the odds in your favor.
Speaker ANumber one Name the stakes.
Speaker ASimply help people to understand what you are up against.
Speaker AAs simple as possible Right now, the Business Development Podcast, a small independent Canadian show, is up against multibillion dollar networks.
Speaker AThat's it.
Speaker ANo more, no less.
Speaker AIt is an underdog story like no other.
Speaker AName it simply Number two, lead with your underdog story.
Speaker AWe just did that right there.
Speaker ALet people know why you need that support, what you are up against.
Speaker ANumber three Provide plug and play assets.
Speaker AMake it as easy as humanly possible for people to support you.
Speaker AProvide imagery, provide messaging, provide links.
Speaker AProvide anything else you think might be valuable to help people to share.
Speaker AAnd heck, might even be as simple as having them reshare your already existing post.
Speaker ABut make it as simple as humanly possible and provide all the plug and play assets that you can.
Speaker ANumber four Celebrate the small wins publicly.
Speaker AAre you now second instead of third Celebrate the small wins publicly.
Speaker ACelebrate every big share.
Speaker ACelebrate every media mention.
Speaker AFind all the reasons you can to celebrate the small wins.
Speaker APeople love supporting a winner.
Speaker ANumber five personalized outreach.
Speaker ADon't be afraid to send 200 direct messages.
Speaker AHumans resonate with human messaging, okay?
Speaker AFind a way to connect personally.
Speaker AIt'll absolutely add rocket fuel to your fire.
Speaker ANumber six Rotate your creative.
Speaker AHave you already used an image over and over and over again?
Speaker AIt's time to swap it up.
Speaker ACreate a new message.
Speaker AFind a way to add variety to your messaging.
Speaker AFind a way to get new images, new posts in front of people.
Speaker ANumber seven Turn supporters into advocates.
Speaker AIf you have people who are absolutely behind what you do, find ways to have them amplify your message.
Speaker AAsk them to share with their networks.
Speaker AAsk them to reach out to contacts who might be valuable to you.
Speaker ATurn supporters into advocates.
Speaker AHelp them advocate on your behalf.
Speaker ANumber 8 Express gratitude every chance you can.
Speaker AEvery message.
Speaker AGuys, don't be afraid to let people know how much you appreciate them, how thankful you are for their support.
Speaker ALike I said, people don't have to help you.
Speaker ALet them know you appreciate it.
Speaker ANumber nine, accept what you can't control.
Speaker AListen, we're up against billion dollar networks.
Speaker AThere's a pretty solid chance that even with all the help I can get, I might not win.
Speaker AIt is what it is, and I'm going to have to accept that.
Speaker AAccept what you can't control.
Speaker ASometimes you can't win, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't fight.
Speaker AAnd number 10, remember, every fight builds momentum for the next one.
Speaker AYou will learn lessons every time you take this on.
Speaker AYeah, this year we're fighting hard.
Speaker AWe're up against a pretty big challenge, but every fight builds momentum for the next one.
Speaker AEvery fight builds lessons learned for the next one.
Speaker ADon't run from a fight, run towards it.
Speaker ARemember, guys, you don't beat giants with budgets.
Speaker AYou beat them with people.
Speaker AThat's the moral of this story.
Speaker AThat's the truth I want you to carry with you today.
Speaker ABecause whether it's an award, a business deal or a dream you're chasing, the fight will never be fair.
Speaker AThe giants will always have more money, more reach, more resources.
Speaker ABut what they don't have is you.
Speaker AThey don't have your grit, they don't have your belief, and they don't have your community.
Speaker AThis show has always been about more than just business development.
Speaker AIt's about people.
Speaker AIt's about underdogs who choose not to give up.
Speaker AIt's about proving again and again that ordinary people can build extraordinary things when they come together.
Speaker AYou've stood behind this show.
Speaker AYou've believed in its mission, and you've given us the ability to keep putting this out into the world.
Speaker AFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Speaker ABut even more than sponsors, it's been you, the listeners of this community, my rockstars, the people who tune in every week, who share episodes with friends, who reach out with encouragement.
Speaker AYou're the reason I fight.
Speaker AYou're the reason this show continues to grow, and you're the reason we're even in this position today and going toe to toe with billion dollar networks.
Speaker AHere's the truth.
Speaker AWe can win this, but not because of me, not because of the podcast alone.
Speaker AWe can win only through community.
Speaker ASo here's my ask, and it's a big one.
Speaker AI need your support on this.
Speaker AI need your vote.
Speaker AI need your share.
Speaker AIf you've ever listened to this podcast and taken something away from it, if this show has given you hope, if it's helped you move the needle in your own business now I need you to move the needle for us.
Speaker AIt just takes 10 seconds to vote.
Speaker AThe link is in the show notes and once you've voted, share it, post it, text it to a friend.
Speaker AEvery single share matters, every single person you bring into this fight strengthens the community that makes this podcast possible.
Speaker AIt's about proving what we've been saying all along, that underdogs can stand toe to toe with giants, that community changes the outcome, that together we can take on Goliath.
Speaker ASo let's do it.
Speaker ALet's show them the power of people.
Speaker ALet's show them the power of our community.
Speaker ALet's win this thing the only way we know how, by rallying together and refusing to quit.
Speaker AThank you so much for being part of this journey.
Speaker AThank you for standing with me and thank you for proving every single week that the underdog power of community is real.
Speaker AI'm never not surprised with the power of our incredible community on this show, I think to me, that's been the most incredible thing that's truly been the power of the podcast has been the community.
Speaker AWe've been able to surround ourselves with the incredible rockstar listeners, the expert guests, the sponsors, just people who truly believe in what we're doing here and want to help the next generation of business.
Speaker ASo from the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you.
